How are clear braces and Invisalign different?

Find Confidence in Your Smile

Ceramic Vs Clear Braces
  • Cooper Orthodontics
  • | May 20, 2022

Clear braces and Invisalign may sound similar, and these words tend to be used interchangeably – but they aren’t the same thing! They’re both high-quality, aesthetically-appealing treatments – but they have different features, benefits, and commitment levels.

Here’s everything you need to know about clear braces vs. Invisalign, so you can make the best decision for your smile.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign, sometimes called “invisible braces”, is a modern orthodontic system that uses custom-made clear aligners to straighten teeth and align the bite. Each set of aligners is designed to guide the teeth one step closer to their end position, over a course of 18 months or so.

(While the average treatment period is around 12 to 18 months with Invisalign for adultsyour treatment may be shorter or longer depending on your case!)

Invisalign aligners are worn for at least 22 hours every day, and can be removed as the patient needs. This is one of the main differentiators between Invisalign and braces—Invisalign can be removed and placed back in, and braces are non-removable during your treatment.

What are clear braces?

Many people want to transform their smile with braces but they prefer a more discreet treatment option than traditional metal braces. This is where clear braces come into the picture!

We’re proud to provide 3M™ Clarity™ Ceramic Braces as a more esthetic alternative to metal braces.

Clear braces use ceramic brackets that are relatively transparent and blend in with the natural color of the teeth, making them virtually undetectable from a short distance.

Ceramic braces work similarly to traditional braces, using brackets and wires to place strategic pressure on the teeth to guide them in the right direction. Your orthodontist will bond the brackets to your teeth, then connect them via a strong archwire to apply the right pressure to the teeth.

When it comes to appearance with clear braces versus Invisalign, the right option for you depends on your preferences!

Who can wear clear braces?

Clear braces can be used for people of any age! Our experienced orthodontists in South Florida can treat a number of different conditions with clear braces, including:

  • Crowded or crooked teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Underbites
  • Overbites
  • Open bites
  • Cross bites

In general, clear braces will most likely be an ideal alternative if you’re not a good candidate for Invisalign.

Clear braces versus Invisalign: Commitment Required

Patients will need to invest time and energy into whatever solution will work best for them, but Invisalign does require more commitment in order for patients to experience the best results.

Invisalign needs to be worn for at least 22 hours a day, and they’re removable, which means you have to commit to keeping them for as long as your orthodontist advises.

If you neglect to wear your clear aligners for too long, we may have to adjust your treatment plan to allow for a longer process.

If you feel you are too forgetful or can’t commit to at least 22 hours of wearing Invisalign every day, you may need a more hands-off approach to creating your best smile.

Clear braces cannot be removed, so you don’t have to worry about forgetting to put them back in your mouth. However, you will need to be extra diligent with brushing and flossing, as the brackets and archwire collect food particles and plaque.

Which is better? Clear braces or Invisalign?

The best treatment option for you will depend on your preferences and the severity of your condition. There are pros and cons to both Invisalign andclear braces. The best option should be determined on an individual basis.

If you want to find out which option is best for you, please schedule your complimentary exam with us! We’re here to guide you through your treatment process, from your very first visit to your last appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Whats better clear braces or Invisalign?
When deciding between clear braces and Invisalign, consider your commitment level. Invisalign requires 22 hours of daily wear and is removable, while clear braces are non-removable but need diligent oral care. Clear braces may be ideal for complex cases.
Should I get clear aligners or braces?
Choosing between clear aligners and braces depends on your commitment level. Clear aligners offer flexibility but require strict adherence, while braces are fixed but need less daily attention. Consult with an orthodontist to determine the best option for your smile.
Is ClearCorrect or Invisalign better?
When comparing ClearCorrect and Invisalign, both are effective clear aligner options for straightening teeth. Invisalign is more widely known and has been around longer, offering a proven track record. ClearCorrect may be more cost-effective for some patients. Ultimately, the choice depends on individual needs and preferences.
How much do clear braces cost?
The cost of clear braces can vary depending on the complexity of the treatment, location, and orthodontic practice. On average, clear braces may range from $4,000 to $8,000. It's best to schedule a consultation with an orthodontist for an accurate estimate tailored to your specific needs.
Are clear braces more effective?
Clear braces are effective for various orthodontic issues like crowded teeth, gaps, and misalignments. They provide consistent pressure for tooth movement, offering a reliable treatment option for those who may not be suitable candidates for Invisalign. Regular adjustments and proper oral hygiene are crucial for optimal results.
Do invisalign braces stain easily?
Invisalign aligners can stain if not properly cared for. Avoid consuming colored drinks or foods while wearing them, and follow the cleaning instructions provided by your orthodontist to prevent staining. Regular cleaning can help maintain the clear appearance of the aligners.
Can clear braces fix overbites?
Clear braces can effectively fix overbites by applying strategic pressure to guide the teeth into the correct position. Orthodontists use ceramic brackets and wires to address overbites, along with other dental conditions like crowded or crooked teeth and gapped teeth.
How long does invisalign treatment take?
The duration of Invisalign treatment typically lasts around 18 months, but this can vary depending on individual needs. Compliance with wearing the aligners for at least 22 hours a day is crucial for successful results within the estimated timeframe.

Soak aligners in a cleaning solution or use Invisalign cleaning crystals. 4. Brush and floss teeth before reinserting aligners or cleaning braces.

How comfortable are invisalign aligners?
Invisalign aligners are generally comfortable to wear due to their smooth, custom-fit design. Some patients may experience initial discomfort or pressure during the adjustment period after switching to a new set of aligners, but this typically subsides quickly.

Clear braces and Invisalign are both popular orthodontic treatment options, but they have key differences. Invisalign uses clear aligners to straighten teeth, while clear braces use ceramic brackets and wires. Additionally, Invisalign is removable, while clear braces are not.

Another difference is the commitment required for each treatment. Invisalign must be worn for at least 22 hours a day, while clear braces are non-removable. Patients need to carefully consider their lifestyle and commitment level when choosing between the two options.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a modern orthodontic system that uses custom-made clear aligners to straighten teeth and align the bite. These aligners are virtually invisible and can be removed for eating and cleaning. Invisalign treatment typically lasts around 18 months and requires regular check-ups with an orthodontist.

Patients who choose Invisalign appreciate the convenience of removable aligners and the ability to maintain their oral hygiene routine without any restrictions. Invisalign is a popular choice for adults and teens who want a discreet orthodontic treatment.

Who can wear clear braces?

Clear braces are suitable for patients who may not be good candidates for Invisalign. These braces are ideal for treating various orthodontic issues, including crowded or crooked teeth, gapped teeth, underbites, overbites, and more. Clear braces use ceramic brackets that blend in with the natural color of teeth for a more aesthetic appearance.

Patients considering clear braces should consult with their orthodontist to determine if this treatment option is suitable for their specific needs. Clear braces offer a reliable and effective way to achieve a straighter smile for those who prefer a fixed orthodontic treatment.
