Orthodontic treatment is designed to be smooth and predictable, but sometimes unexpected issues arise. Whether it’s a poking wire, a loose bracket, or sudden discomfort, knowing how to handle minor orthodontic emergencies can make all the difference. At Cooper Orthodontics, we want our patients and parents to feel prepared and confident when facing any bumps in the road during treatment.
Common Orthodontic Emergencies & How to Handle Them
Not every orthodontic issue requires an immediate trip to the office. Here’s how to manage common problems at home and when to seek professional help.
1. Poking Wires
Symptoms: A wire from your braces is sticking out and irritating your cheeks or gums.
Quick Fix: Use a cotton swab or the eraser end of a pencil to gently push the wire into a more comfortable position. If that doesn’t work, place orthodontic wax over the sharp end to prevent irritation. If the wire is too long and causing significant discomfort, you may trim it carefully with sterilized nail clippers.
When to Call Us: If the wire is painful and cannot be repositioned, contact our office.
2. Loose or Broken Brackets
Symptoms: A bracket has detached from a tooth but is still attached to the wire.
Quick Fix: If the bracket is still attached to the wire and not causing discomfort, leave it in place and cover it with wax. If the bracket is completely loose, remove it carefully and store it in a safe place until you come in for a repair.
When to Call Us: A loose bracket won’t necessarily cause immediate harm, but it should be fixed as soon as possible to keep your treatment on track.
3. Loose or Lost Rubber Bands (Ligatures)
Symptoms: A rubber band (ligature) around a bracket has popped off.
Quick Fix: If you still have the rubber band, you can try using sterile tweezers to put it back in place. If you can’t fix it, leave it off and avoid pulling on the remaining bands.
When to Call Us: If multiple ligatures have come off, contact our office to schedule a repair.
4. Soreness & Discomfort
Symptoms: General soreness after adjustments or irritation from brackets and wires.
Quick Fix: This is common and a sign that your treatment is working as it should. Take over-the-counter pain relievers (like ibuprofen or acetaminophen) as needed. Rinse with a warm saltwater solution to soothe irritation. Apply orthodontic wax over brackets or wires causing irritation. Stick to soft foods (mashed potatoes, yogurt, smoothies) until discomfort subsides.
When to Call Us: If the pain is severe or lasts more than a few days, let us know so we can check for any issues.
5. Lost or Broken Retainer
Symptoms: Your retainer has cracked, warped, or gone missing.
Quick Fix: If your retainer is lost, wear your previous retainer (if available) until we can replace it. If it’s broken, do not continue wearing it, as it may cause unintended movement of your teeth.
When to Call Us: Retainers are crucial for maintaining your results. Contact us as soon as possible for a replacement.
